Our Programs

Creative Curriculum

At Little Kings and Queens, we follow the CREATIVE CURRICULUM. We are a play-based program, in which children are free to decide how they will spend their time. It is our strong belief that children learn as they play and interact with their environment. Literacy, math, science, and art are the core learning concepts woven throughout the curriculum, utilizing the basic principle that learning and development occur when young children interact with the environment and people around them. We believe young children initiate most of the activities required for learning and development. It is our responsibility as educators to guide and facilitate this dynamic process. Each day, teachers prepare a supportive environment with a variety of activity choices. Teachers are there to support learning and to observe and make note of the choices which children make. Those observations are the basis for developing ongoing curriculum from week to week. In this way, activities and environments are a direct reflection of the children and teachers who spend their days in each classroom in the Center. At Little Kings and Queens, we provide a relaxed pace, with a balance maintained between indoor and outdoor-time, quiet-time and active-time, individual or small group activity, and larger group occasions. Teachers plan activities during the day based on the interests of children in their groups, taking care to provide a variety of choices to meet individual needs within the group. A typical day includes lots of opportunities for growth and exploration. Your little one might spend time painting, playing with blocks, jumping rope, or digging on the playground. Of course, there’s always plenty of reading, word games, and singing, all of which help lay the foundation for a good reader. Of course, the Infant Center works very hard to respect each baby’s individual schedule, allowing babies to eat, sleep, and play as their body dictates. We do put special emphasis on the social aspects of our program. Little Kings and Queens is a great place to learn how to make friends, how to be a friend, and how to get individual needs met in a group setting. Each day provides opportunities to participate in large and small group activities. Many of our children establish friendships here, over a period of several years, which they continue to enjoy even after they have moved on to elementary school. We also carefully plan our environment so that children can feel successful and comfortable enough to take risks as they are ready. While this occurs in different ways for infants and toddlers than it does for preschoolers, it is all toward the goal of helping children understand how they fit into this complex world.

Infant Care

The discovery begins, the first years of life are filled with wondrous adventures and challenges for both children and parents. The Infant Room provides a caring, engaging, and dynamic atmosphere for infants to begin exploring their world. Each baby and their family is welcomed to the Center by our loving and highly experienced caregivers. Together, they work to meet the unique and individual needs of each child. The schedule varies as the room is on-demand. Eating, sleeping, and planned activity times are individualized. Each child is a unique individual with different needs, rhythms, and rates of development. We make every effort to accommodate your requests and your baby's special needs. Parents are welcome to visit our room at any time, and we have a breastfeeding friendly facility. Interactions with each infant take place in accordance with their own level of maturation and unique temperament. We provide a variety of activities, including exercise and movement, songs and finger-plays (Itsy Bitsy Spider), fine and gross motor skills, language development, and more.  Our infant room is exceptionally sanitary, we require everyone to remove their shoes upon arrival into the infant classroom, and handwashing, toys, and furniture are disinfected multiple times during the day to help keep our babies happy and healthy!

Toddler

Your toddler wants nothing more than your undivided attention while playing in a safe nursery school environment. The toddler class is a fun and positive interaction between child and teacher. Together we will participate in art, music and movement, puppetry and storytime, fingerplays, songs, and daily themes designed to develop language, motor, and social skills. Little Kings and Queens offer a nurturing child-directed and teacher-guided toddler program with open centers and active outdoor playtime for our 1 and 2 year-olds. The daily curriculum revolves around monthly themes. The children also enjoy seasonal activities; our goal is to achieve total enjoyment and learning during their first school experience.

Preschool

The Preschool program fosters learning and development in social/emotional, physical, cognitive, and language. We have used our knowledge of how children develop and learn to create an environment where children are safe and comfortable and feel they belong. An effective learning environment also helps children develop independence and confidence as learners. Our classrooms are learning environments that provide children with hands-on experiences. Each area or center invites children to explore actively, experiment, share, and play creatively with all materials. The classroom centers include dramatic play, blocks, music and movement, manipulative toys and games, math, library and group time area, science, sand and water, art, writing, and oral language & listening. The physical environment sets the learning stage and affects children's behavior. Our 'Circle time' learning environment provides daily opportunities for oral language, phonological awareness, alphabetic knowledge, number recognition, vocabulary knowledge, story comprehension, sign language, and "Show & Tell" (Thursdays), including a theme/topic.  Spanish is also integrated into our program!

The daily schedule is well balanced and flexible, which includes active and quiet times.  There are large group activities, small group activities, and time to play alone or with others. It includes indoor and outdoor playtime, and there are times for child-initiated and teacher-directed activities. The social atmosphere is created by having rules to guide behavior. The classroom provides opportunities for children to work together and cooperate. Our classrooms function as a community that helps children to relate positively to others and to resolve conflicts peacefully by using words to express their feelings.
